The xenophobic fear of and violence towards Asian communities in response to COVID-19 begins to accelerate.

This harkens back to a legacy of xenophobic violence against Asian communities, going back to the racist notion of "Yellow Peril," which is a fear of Asian immigrants that began in the 19th century in response to (mostly white) fears about opium, disease, and economic power.
