The U.S. Supreme Court rules that genetic material from cheek swabs can be used in police bookings.
Date: 2013
In Maryland v. King, King was arrested for assault. A cheek swab was collected at the time of his booking and entered into the Maryland DNA system where an unresolved rape case showed a match. King testifies that this violated his Fourth Amendment right of prohibiting unreasonable searches and seizures. He asks for the DNA evidence to be suppressed, but the Court rules that cheek swabs count as part of a justifiable booking procedure just like fingerprints.
