Healthcare workers join community protests demanding a trauma center in Chicago's South Side.
Date: 2014
Due to the high prevalence of gun violence in some South Chicago neighborhoods, community members express concern that trauma victims need to be transported long distances in order to receive emergency care. Through direct organizing from students, doctors, community members, and healthcare professionals, the campaign is ultimately successful, and the University of Chicago is motivated to reopen the adult trauma center at its hospital in Hyde Park. It previously closed the trauma center there in 1988 due to the majority of the patients not having health insurance.
