Following a twelve-year campaign and legal battle led by the Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) and other organizations, a 1998 ban on coverage for gender-affirming hormones and surgeries is overturned in New York. This opens a pathway for low-income trans people in New York to access gender-affirming care.

The U.S. Department of Health also repeals a transgender healthcare ban in the Medicare system the same year.
