Three former U.S. Surgeons General publish a paper calling for the reexamination of early genital surgeries on children with intersex traits, stating: "Those whose oath or conscience says 'do no harm' should heed the simple fact that, to date, research does not support the practice of cosmetic infant genitoplasty" (Elders et al, 2017).

One of the three former Surgeon Generals, Dr. Joycelyn Elders, credits SisterSong's 2007 conference for being influential in changing her mind about intersex surgery, as she met an intersex Woman of Color activist at the conference who helped shape her opinion.
