Saint Augustine asserts the concept of “holy war.”
Date: 300s
Many early Christian teachings emphasized pacifism. Augustine believes that war is a part of life and needs to be reconciled with Christian faith. He asserts that while war is always the result of sin, war can also remedy sin. He names violence as justified when it was used to protect the innocent from the dangerous. This concept of “holy war” will define the coming colonization of Christian lands, the later Crusades, and then the justification for the Christian colonization of the Americas.
