By 2016, there are three times as many people with mental health disabilities in the prison system as in state psychiatric hospitals. The majority of these are People of Color.
According to one recent estimate, correctional facilities confine at least 360,000 men and women with mental health disabilities, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression. In a federal survey, 15% of people incarcerated in state prisons and 24% of people held in jails acknowledged symptoms of psychosis, such as hallucinations or delusions.
