New rules allow hospital fundraising staff to access patient information.
Date: 2013
A shift in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) rules allows referrals between physicians and hospital fundraising staff. While patient information is more greatly protected from non-hospital staff under these rules, it is more available to those working within the hospital, including in fundraising. This erodes the line between fundraising and direct service staff, and opens up the potential for direct asks from fundraisers to physicians for help in raising funds.
