First recorded case of smallpox reaches what is now called Texas (formerly Mexico) well before colonizers themselves.
Date: 1520
Communication between communities, in northern Mexico and what is now called Texas, traditionally happened by runners moving between communities carrying messages. It is assumed that a runner with an infection brought the virus from northern Mexico. The southern part of what will become the U.S. was already devastated by disease, so that when British colonizers first see the land, they define it as "empty" of people and use this as justification for further colonization.
