In the rush to establish new for-profit nursing homes, many companies have poorly constructed or repurposed buildings without fire alarms or sprinkler systems. When multiple nursing facilities burn down with high casualties amongst elderly residents in the 1950s and 60s, concern are raised about the need for increased regulations.
