Southern European adaptation to malaria aids in the expansion of the Roman Empire.
Date: 700s BCE
The genetic adaptation to malaria takes many generations to emerge, and by the period of the expansion of the Roman Empire, Italians have developed some genetic protection along with some medicines to treat the disease. This protects the center of the Empire, as armies of Northerners rebelling against imperial expansion fall ill after they enter Italy, rendering them unable to maintain the strength required to overthrow Rome.
