In addition to draining wetlands to increase arable land for farming, the political strategy behind the "Drain the Swamps" campaign includes combatting the use of wetlands by Indigenous and Black people fleeing enslavement as free spaces to hide and build community. In particular, the wetlands of the Everglades, Arkansas, Missouri, eastern Indiana, and western Ohio are targeted to be drained and filled.
