The active ingredient in opium is isolated by a German pharmacist's apprentice, Friedrich Sertürner. Named after Morpheus, the god of sleep, morphine is initially difficult to produce. It will not be until the invention of the hypodermic needle a few decades later that morphine will become critical to the medical industry and widely used.
