Fewer than 1% of jails and prisons in the United States offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid addiction, even though up to 25% of incarcerated people nationwide are dependent on opioids.
Many correctional facilities require incarcerated people who have been taking buprenorphine, methadone, or naltrexone treatments for addiction to detox off the medications. This practice been called out for being in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
