A biological understanding of neurodiversity slowly begins to emerge in the field of psychology. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of "Mental Disorders," Third Edition (DSM-III) published in 1980 establishes autism as a separate diagnosis that is distinct from schizophrenia for the first time.
