The convention is moved to Jacksonville, Florida after North Carolina refused to allow packed crowds at the rally. The new date for the convention falls on August 27, the 40th anniversary of Ax Handle Saturday. In 1960, the Ku Klux Klan organized a white mob — many carrying ax handles — to attack Black civil rights protesters attempting to desegregate a white-only lunch counter.
